Summer Safari - The Art of Wild Insect Photography
Summer Safaris Workshop Description
Learn the lost art of photographing wild insects in the field! If you have ever wondered if it was possible to photograph insects without manipulation, then this workshop is for you. Since this area's vegetation is lush and teeming with life this time of year, we'll explore the use of natural light and flash (Fill light and Full TTL) to photograph insects and other small creatures like spiders, reptiles, and amphibians without using physical manipulation. In addition to photographing close-up subjects during the workshop we'll also take time to photograph the area's diverse and unique landscapes.
During calm conditions we will seek out rare and protected species of plants. Many of these species only grow within the area's limestone regions that make up the Niagara Escarpment within the Eastern District of the Hiawatha Forest. We will teach and adhere to strict ethical guidelines to avoid trampling sensitive habitats and harming individual plants. Many species of ferns (rare and common) occur in this area and at this time of year they should be in good condition and at their best for photography. If we are fortunate, and growing conditions have been favorable, we'll photograph purple-fringed and grass pink orchids.
After photographing landscapes, plant life or insects in the natural light of early morning, we can expect to spend some time toward the middle of each day photographing insects, using either modern TTL flash or natural light, depending on the conditions. To get the most out of the workshop, participants need to have built up a full photographic system and have the tools to photograph a diverse selection of subjects. A prerequisite is having a longer focal length lens (180-200mm range) with the capability to focus closely along with an appropriate flash system. If you don't already have this capability, we can help you put together a simple flash system designed for photographing free-roaming insects (not birds). All of our insect photography will be geared toward teaching you how to photograph wild, unrestrained insects in their natural habitat. If you are not interested in participating in this type of activity we urge you to consider taking one of our other workshops.
While the workshop is based in Curtis, Michigan, we will venture out to explore a variety of habitats and locations such as the extensive peatlands of Tahquamenon Falls State Park, and Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Seney is a natural sanctuary for reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The workshop is timed to coincide with the mass emergence of Monarch butterflies, plus several species of hairstreak, copper, fritillary (great spangled, Aphrodite and Atlantis), white admirals, and northern pearl-crescent butterflies. Significant summer hatches of many other fascinating insects will also be taking place. We can expect to see several species of dragonflies along with one of the most sought after dragonflies, whose name suggests its fierce nature - the dragonhunter! This time of year is also best for finding female goldenrod crab spiders. These colorful spiders have the unique ability to change color to match the flower on which they're hunting. As a result, you'll see spiders that are white with pink stripes on ox-eye daisy, and deep yellow ones with pink stripes on black-eyed susan blossoms.
Biting insects will be present during this workshop, so participants must be prepared with repellent and/or netting, and psychological fortitude. Participants must be able to crawl around on hands and knees, photograph for extended periods of time, and work well with others. The goal is to spend a maximum amount of time photographing a variety of subjects in a diversity of habitats.
Because of the extensive daylight hours at this northern latitude at this time of year, we will not attempt to photograph every sunrise and sunset. We can still expect long periods in the field (on calm days) as we focus our energies on plant, insect and landscape subjects.
With a limit of just six participants and with both Rod and Marlene guiding you in the field, personalized instruction is a hallmark of this workshop. We will carpool in two vehicles, with Rod and Marlene each traveling with three participants. You could also use this as a great opportunity to get together with a group of friends - we can customize the workshop to fit your needs and interests.
This workshop will benefit users of either film or digital systems. There will be some discussion of digital workflow during the course of the week, but the main emphasis of the workshop is on the field process of nature photography. Whether you use a film-based or digital system, Rod and Marlene will help you get the best image quality possible with your equipment.

The cost of the Advanced Workshop is $995 per person. This includes the cost of tuition and any necessary permits. Participants are responsible for lodging, meals, and transportation to the workshop.
